Algebraic and fractional thinking in collective mathematical reasoning

چکیده
Abstract This study examines the collective mathematical reasoning when students and teachers in grades 3, 4, 5 explore fractions derived from length comparisons, a task inspired by El´konin Davydov curriculum. The analysis showed that was mainly anchored properties related to fractional or algebraic thinking. Further these arguments were characterised interplay between thinking except conclusion stage. In evaluative arguments, two types of appeared be intertwined. Another result is discovery new type argument, identifying which deals with first step solving. Here, different including not initiated only but also students. multilingual classroom large proportion newly arrived. Compared earlier research, this offers more detailed possible patterns within reasoning. An implication appear intertwined than previous suggested.

Developing a model to enhance elementary teachers’ ability to foster functional thinking and algebraic reasoning in elementary students
Abstract: This study explores the process of change of grades 3 to 5 elementary teachers, who participated in a professional development program "Algebraic Thinking: Foundation of Elementary Mathematics". Algebraic thinking as a functional thinking was the centerpiece of the program. The “Concern Base Adaptation Model” (CBAM) was used as methodology. The results of the study showed the signific...

With the rise of ubiquitous networked communication due to the internet and its enhancement by mobile access anytime, anywhere, our capacities for effective problemsolving both on the practical and the more abstract levels have vastly increased. Two domains where one would expect such increases to be particularly noticeable are democratic politics on the one hand, and scientific and technologic...
متن کاملMathematical Thinking in Chemistry
Mathematical chemistry is often thought to be a 20-century subdiscipline of chemistry, but in this paper we discuss several early chemical ideas and some landmarks of chemistry as instances of the mathematical way of thinking; many of them before 1900. By the mathematical way of thinking, we follow Weyl’s description of it in terms of functional thinking, i.e. setting up variables, symbolizing ...
متن کاملThinking and Reasoning in Medicine
Medical reasoning describes a form of qualitative inquiry that examines the cognitive (thought) processes involved in making medical decisions. Clinical reasoning, medical problem solving, diagnostic reasoning, and decision-making are all terms used in a growing body of literature that examines how clinicians make clinical decisions. Medical cognition refers to studies of cognitive processes, s...
متن کاملCollective Intelligence and Design Thinking
Collective intelligence (or CI) has recently emerged as a potential magnifier of design thinking. A surge of internet based social computing applications are achieving surprising results from people thinking collectively, without the aid or restrictions of formal organisation, supervision, or even payment in the conventional sense. Some of the best known applications, such as Threadless and Top...
